/’fu:bar/ je multimedijalno participativno događanje s tematikom greške u interdisciplinarnoj umjetnosti novih medija i procesu njezinoga nastajanja. Događanje se u 2017., treći put odvija u AKC Medika (Pierottijeva 11, Zagreb), a građeno je umjetničkim/autorskim izlaganjima, edukativnim programom, umjetničkim audio(vizualnim) izvedbama te kontinuirano otvorenom izložbom glitch umjetnosti.

Fokus ovogodišnjeg /’fu:bar/ festivala jest na pojmu dijeljenja i digitalnog zajedništva u recentnoj novomedijskoj /glitch/ umjetnosti, orijentiranoj ethosu i dugoročnom potencijalu reinterpretacijske, slobodne digitalne kulture.

Sedmodnevni festival počinje 7. listopada, otvaranjem skupne izložbe djela više od osamdeset autor(ic)a u galeriji Siva, uz živu izvedbu audio umjetnika Trevora Browna [AU].

/’fu:bar/ sukreiraju brojni gosti i gošće – Bastien Lavaud / Holographic Thought Process [FR] koji predstavlja radionicu analognog glitcha; niz umjetnika/ca, moderatora/ica i razvojnih inženjera koji će izlaganjima i diskusijama potaknuti diskurs o potencijalima i novim paradigmama rekonstruiranja i redistribucije novih medija – Tonči Bakotin / Ruzina Frankulin [RH], Way Spurr-Chen / Glitchet [US], Zoe Stawska / Dream Doctor [PL] i Kaspar Ravel [FR].

Večernji program festivala grade raznorodni multimedijski performansi koji otkrivaju čitav kaleidoskop umjetničkih reinterpretacijskih praksi, a koje u prostoru galerije Siva uživo izvode autori Tomasz Sulej / generateme [PL], Jo FRGMNT Grys [DE], Tin Dožić [RH], Dérive [FR].

Program završava u petak, 13.10., multimedijskim performansom koji predstavlja niz suradničkih audiovizualnih istraživanja umjetnika Luke Prinčiča [SI].

Inspirirano dvadesetpetogodišnjim radom u autohtonim zajednicama, te četiri godine djelovanja u Istri, čiju je mikrotonsku ljestvicu zaštitio UNESCO, kao i istraživanjem pitagorejske harmonike i prirodne intonacije, djelo se polako razvija, a temelji se na prirodnoj harmoniji i substrahiranim ili interpoliranim temeljnim tonovima, te neprimjetno teče između profinjenih i izazovnih zvučnosti.

Inspired by work in Indigenous communities over the last 25 years and also, over the last four, in Istria, a tiny region in west Croatia, whose microtonal scale has been listed in the UNESCO  Intangible Cultural Heritage List, as well as explorations in Pythagorian Harmonics and Just Intonation, the slowly evolving work builds on natural harmonies and subtracted or interpolated fundamentals, it flows between sublime and challenging sonorities at an almost imperceptible rate.

Trevor Brown [AU]

— Slobodni kompozitor, multiinstrumentalist, improvizator, redatelj, producent, dizajner zvuka, povremeni akademičar i radio voditelj. Djeluje u više umjetničkih i kulturnih područja i disciplina te ima 30 godina profesionalnog iskustva na međunarodnoj sceni.

Njegova praksa najvećim dijelom bazirana je u Australiji, no redovito odlazi na europske turneje, u okviru čitavog spektra samostalnih projekata i suradnji u Italiji, Hrvatskoj, Austriji i Njemačkoj.

Trenutno je umjetnički voditelj dvaju festivala; Alpha Waves Series – festivala nove glazbe u Sydneyu, te The Pleasure Grounds – umjetničkog festivala u vinogradima doline Hunter.

Trevor Brown is a freelance composer, multi-instrumentalist, improviser, director, producer, sound designer, occasional academic and radio presenter who works across several artistic and cultural fields and disciplines and has 30 years of professional experience in the international arena.

He works extensively within Australia, and tours regularly to Europe with a range of solo projects and collaborative projects in Italy, Croatia, Austria and Germany. He is currently the artistic director of two festivals, Alpha Waves Series, a new music festival in Sydney, and The Pleasure Grounds, a multi arts festival in the vineyards of the Hunter Valley.

An introduction to analog video signals, followed by a presentation of the circuits the author is working on, and making people solder their own glitch circuit.

Bastien Lavaud / Holographic Thought Process [FR]

Po otkrivanju interesa za izradu elektroničkih sklopova za glazbene sintesajzere, Holographic Thought Process djeluje u potpuno novome svijetu video sklopova.

Utiliziranjem katodne televizijske cijevi i video kamere, u procesu rada autor bilježi sve što prolazi kroz sklopove koje gradi i mijenja, što rezultira mnogobojnim, iskrivljenim slikama.

After taking interest in electronics for music synthesizers, Holographic Thought Process discovered another world around video circuits.

Using a cathode ray tube TV and a camera, the author captures what’s going through the circuits he builds and modifies, resulting into a colorful, distorted imagery.

BITS & PIECES / my intimate entropies and stochastics [Talk @ Galerija Siva, Mon 9.10., 18:00]

An author’s presentation, by Tonči Bakotin / Ruzina Frankulin, on own artistic work based on perceptual coding, psychoacoustics, soundscapes, and extreme compression rates as an artistic transformative gesture transcending common archival inclinations of contemporary digital and/or digitized media. The talk will enclose raw materials – prerequisites of reinterpretative digital media art typology, along with video installation art documentative samples – both of studies, and digital reconstructions of appropriated audio-visuals; digital art objects (to be) after the author’s techno-aesthetical intervention.

Tonči Bakotin / Ruzina Frankulin [RH]

— Rođen je 1973. godine u Splitu. Studirao je oblikovanje zvuka na Rotterdam School of Audio Engineering te film i video na Umjetničkoj akademiji u Splitu. Niz godina radio je kao predavač glazbeno-tonske tehnologije (Rotterdam, Singapur, Bangkok, Ljubljana). Komponirao je glazbu za kazalište i performanse u sklopu kolektiva Zidar Betonsky i Fraktal Falus Teatar. Objavio je elektronsku glazbu u SAD i Francuskoj pod aliasom Ruzina Frankulin.

Tonči Bakotin — Born in 1973 in Split, Croatia. Studied sound design at the Rotterdam School of Audio Engineering and film and video at the University of Split Art Academy. For a number of years Bakotin was teaching courses in music and sound technology (Rotterdam, Singapore, Bangkok, Ljubljana). Composed music for the theatre and performances given by the collectives Zidar Betonsky and Fraktal Falus Theatre. Published electronic music albums in USA and France, under the alias Ruzina Frankulin.

Silent Coding [Performance @ Galerija Siva, Mon 9.10., 21:00]

Tiha vizualna izvedba temeljena na izgradnji kôda bez prethodnog postojećeg izvora.

Autor otvorenim stvaralačkim procesom izgradnje programske skripte na licu mjesta prikazuje nastajanje generativne umjetnosti, te načine korespondiranja autorskog kôda s postojećom vizualnom umjetnošću.

The author builds up a code from scratch, as an open process of a silent coding performance. The created script is then used to to demonstrate relations of given images and generative coding as a creative process.

Tomasz Sulej / generateme [PL]

— Rođen sedamdesetih godina u Poljskoj; trenutno živi u Varšavi. Magistar je primijenjene matematike na varšavskom tehnološkom fakultetu i radi u IT menadžmentu.

Svi interesi dovode ga do područja generativne umjetnosti, te kasnije do glitch umjetnosti, s fokusom na “generativnom glitchu”, odnosno produkciji greške autorskim algoritmima, te istraživanju i primjenjivanju novih umjetničkih tehnika i metoda. Autor je mnogim generativnim skriptama, kao i procesualnim metodama koje otvoreno dijeli sa zajednicama i umjetničkim kolektivima okupljenim oko ideje suradničkog stvaralaštva.

Aktivan je član internetskih zajednica, posebice onih vezanih uz Glitch Artists kolektive – GAC, G//R, GAC:TT, Sonic Art Guild, …

Tomasz Sulej / generateme, born in mid 1970s in Poland; lives in Warsaw. Graduated in Applied Maths, works in IT (software development) industry.

All of his interests brought him to explore the connection between art and code creation in generative and glitch art domains, and to research for new algorithms, techniques and methods which can be used for artistic purposes.

Author of several generative and glitch Processing sketches and innovative methods of processing data. Loves to share knowledge. Active participant of several Internet communities, especially ones connected with Glitch Artists Collective – GAC, G//R, GAC:TT, Sonic Art Guild, …

Glitch Art in the Main Stream [Talk @ Galerija Siva, Tue 10.10., 18:00]

We ironically – hopefully? – proclaim that “glitch art is dead”, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. This lecture will cover glitch art’s rise into mainstream consciousness, how it’s used, and even its aestheticization far removed from the original idea of a digital glitch.

—  Povremeni glitch umjetnik i stalni entuzijast. Vodi Glitchet, webzine suvremenih distopijskih tema, kontekstualiziranih uz glitch umjetnost i nove estetike, a koji služi i kao baza resursa i alata glitch stvaralaštva.

Way Spurr-Chen / Glitchet, is an occasional glitch artist and constant glitch art enthusiast. He runs Glitchet, which is a webzine convering dystopian contemporary topics pressed against the backdrop of glitch art and new aesthetic artwork, as well as a glitch art resources page.

Ultrasonic Noise [Performance @ Galerija Siva, Tue 10.10., 21:00]

Polusatni živi improvizacijski performans s naprednom uradi sam elektronikom, kao što su SNU (Special Noise Unit, FM-sint), sequenceri, ring modulatori i unikatni ultrasonični instrumenti (odašiljači, “šišmišje uši”). Glavne elektroničke jedinice distribuiraju se pod otvorenom licencom, a njihovi nacrti bit će dostupni nakon izvedbe.

The performance is a 20–30 minutes live improvisation with advanced selfmade electronics, involving the SNU (Special Noise Unit, FM-synth), sequencers, ring modulators and unique ultrasonic instruments (transmitters & “bat ears”).

The main Units’ – SNU & sequencer documentation will be distributed by the author under an open license, after the concert.

Jo FRGMNT Grys [DE]

— Rođen 1963. u Essenu u Njemačkoj. Studirao je kemiju, filozofiju, minerologiju, itd. na sveučilištu Justus-Liebig u Gießenu. Nakon školovanja okreće se umjetnosti inspiriranoj znanošću, kojom istražuje formiranje strukture buke i reda, grešaka i zakonitosti, te feedback-a kao glavnih tema vlastite umjetničke prakse.

Grysova praksa bazira se na video šumovima, elektronici, računalima, tijelu i mozgu. Nastupa s noisiV (DIY elektronika  i video manipulacije), TOB (DIY elektronika i odašiljači) te, od 2010, kao FRGMNT (DIY ultrasonični uređaji i strukturirana buka) i 2VM (VJ tim) od 2002. godine.

Grys od 2004. godine izvodi i elektroničke instalacije, te drži radionice. Nastupao je na festivalima kao što su V2´s DEAF (Nizozemska), Piksel (Norveška), Pixelache (Finska), Dorkbot (Švicarska), CTM (Njemačka).

Radi kao umjetnik i izumitelj strojeva. Zadnjih godina javnosti prezentira svoj rad i u području računalne grafike.

Jo FRGMNT Grys: Born 1963 in Essen/Germany. Studied chemistry, philosophy, mineralogy etc @ the Justus-Liebig-University of Gießen then more & more turned towards arts using scientifically influenced thinking to investigate formation of structure from noise & order, from error & law and feedback as his main artistic themes.

 

Grys is working with video-snow, electronics, computers, body & brain. Performed with noisiV (self-made  electronics  and  video manipulations), TOB (transmitters and self-made electronics) as FRGMNT (structured noise & DIY ultrasonics) since 2010 and 2VM (VJ team) since 2002.

Grys also makes electronic installations & gives workshops since 2004. Among other festivals he has taken part in V2´s DEAF NL, Piksel NO, Pixelache FI, Art Trail IE, Dorkbot CH, CTM DE.

Works as an artist & inventor of machines. In recent years he also presents his computer graphics work to the public.

Community Standards [Talk @ Galerija Siva, Wed 11.10., 18:00]

Community Standards is an ongoing project which has developed from an old presentation prepared for the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Much less academic in its form now it mainly focuses on the state of art in social media, communication between artists, artworks, audience and administrators of social networking websites, advantages and limitations resulting from promotion of art in social media and the meaning of life, obviously. (Mostly based on the example of Facebook.)

This project would be shown in a form of a presentation followed by a discussion with audience (Author realizes her own knowledge is limited and sees it rather as an opportunity to develop and engage in a – hopefully – meaningful discussion).

Zoe Stawska / Dream Doctor [PL]

—  Umjetnica “iz zaboravljene zemlje u istočnoj Europi”. Donekle je specijalizirana za glitch umjetnost. U svojoj svetogrdnoj umjetnosti često kombinira katoličke simbole i golotinju. Često je zabranjivana na stranicama društvenih medija. Voli se praviti da ju to ne smeta.
Nedostatak bilo kakvih stvarnih postignuća, sve veća anksioznost i neodoljivi očaj samo dokazuju da je na putu do spektakularnog umjetničkog neuspjeha.

Napustila je umjetničku akademiju, što znači da nije dovršila umjetničko obrazovanje (koje je jedva započela); stoga se sva njezina saznanja i opažanja uglavnom temelje na vlastitim iskustvima i promatranjima. Upozoreni ste.

Zoe Stawska / Dream Doctor, an artist from a God forbidden country in Eastern Europe. Specializes in glitch art, sort of. But not really. A pretty chill person overall.

In her sacrilegious art she often combines catholic symbols and nudity. Often gets banned from social media websites. She likes to pretend it doesn’t bother her.

Lack of any real achievements, growing anxiety and overwhelming desperation only prove she’s on her way to a spectacular artistic failure.

She’s an art school dropout, which means she hasn’t finished her artistic education (and barely even started actually). Thus all her knowledge is mostly based on own experiences and observations. You have been warned.

I Am Sitting In a Room v 2.0 [Performance @ Galerija Siva, Wed 11.10., 21:00]

Zvučni performans I Am Sitting In a Room v 2.0 digitalni je hommage / remiks djela I Am Sitting In a Room’ Alvina Luciera. Fokus djela je na nestabilnosti/osjetljivosti digitalnog medija, te na transformaciji ljudskoga glasa u digitalni artefakt. Transkodiranjem i databending-om uživo snimljene datoteke izvođačevog glasa, istražuju se njezini ekstremi i zvučne teksture koji ju čine potpuno nefunkcionalnom. Ne iskrivljuje se sami glas, već njegova medijska inačica, zvučna datoteka.

The sound performance I Am Sitting In a Room v 2.0 is a digital hommage/remix of the work ‘I Am Sitting In a Room’. The work focuses on human voice becoming a digital artifact and the instabillity/fragillity of digital media. Through transcoding and databending a live recorded file of the artists voice he searches for its extremes and sonic textures that completely render it functionless. It is not the voice that is bent, but its medialized version, the audio file.

 Tin Dožić [RH]

—  Završio je studij psihologije na Hrvatskim studijima Sveučilišta u Zagrebu i nove medije na Akademiji likovnih umjetnosti u Zagrebu. U svojoj praksi polazi od medija zvuka, a bavi se terenskim snimanjem, radiom, eksperimentalnom glazbom i instalacijama. Svoj rad temelji na istraživanju medija kroz prakse izrade vlastitih elektroničkih instrumenata, aproprijacije zastarjelih tehnologija i reciklažu. Izlagao je i nastupao na raznim platformama u Hrvatskoj i inozemstvu, samostalno i u kolaborativnim projektima (Summer Sessions Rotterdam, Izlog suvremenog zvuka, MIMO, Sine Linea, Sound art inkubator, Device art).

Tin Dožić holds an MA in Psychology at the University Department for Croatian Studies (University of Zagreb) and New media studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. His practice originates in the medium of sound, whilst working in the areas of field recording, radio, experimental music and installations. The author’s work is based in media research via creating DIY electronic instruments, appropriating obsolete technology and recycling. He has exhibited and shown at diverse Croatian and international venues/platforms, as a solo artist and in collaborative projects (Summer Sessions Rotterdam, Showroom of Contemporary Sound, MIMO, Sine Linea, Sound art inkubator, Device art).

Kaspar Ravel [FR]

— Novomedijski umjetnik i jedan od kustosa Glitch Artists Collective-a. Voli razbijati stvari i popravljati ih na vlastiti način.

Odrastao je u devedesetima, i “odgojen je računalima”. Od malih nogu okružen je napola funkcionalnim strojevima prikupljenim na ulicama Pariza, te korumpiranim podacima iz ilegalnih preuzetih datoteka. Zakleo se da nikad neće koristiti priručnike. Unatoč dugogodišnjem spontanom istraživačkom djelovanju, njegov fokus se formirao prema novim, danas sveprisutnim politikama digitalnih medija koji podliježu i priznanjima, no i velikim stupnjevima kontrole, degradacije i nadzora.

Autor svoje djelovanje centrira oko anti-konzumerističkih navika digitalnog doba i “digitalne slobode” – slobodnog čitanja, zapisivanja, korištenja, rastavljanja te aproprijacije medija i podataka – u svrhu kreiranja estetičnih djela u kategoriji glitch umjetnosti.

Being a kid in the 90’s meant you were probably raised by computers. In my case it meant being surrounded with partly-functional machines scraped from the streets, corrupted data from illegal downloads & a sworn promise to never bore myself with any kind of instruction book.

As much as I loved going off tracks, throwing myself constantly in unexplored terrains, today there’s a bigger picture to it than there was 10 years ago. Over the years, digital media gradually became more and more present. And when some people just acknowledged it, others built walls, restrained access, willingly deteriorated it, and planted snitches in everything.

In the digital era, the concept of deciding how you want to read write & execute data is free will, thus, the reason glitch art is so important to me. Once you deviate your consumer habits, taking any media, breaking it apart & re-appropriating it by making it into something you find beautiful is one of the best feelings ever. Why ? Because these moments are the inspiration to your digital freedom.

Dérive & Shai Hulud : about police state and the underground [Performance @ Galerija Siva, Thu 12.10., 21:00]

 

Performans koji prenosi i projicira snimku ekrana s isječcima navala prilikom nasilnih prosvjeda, te (pariških) katakombi. Uživo, na lokaciji snimani derivat izvornika prikazan je pomoću PS2 koji je, uz postojeće digitalne efekte i kalibraciju videa, spojen na Tachyons+ Opti-Glitch koji dodatno ometa sliku. Kamera koja prati pred-postojeću snimku spojena je na video projektor putem kojega gledatelji mogu pratiti žive alteracije izvornog materijala. Performans prati vaportrap glazba Shai Huluda, komponirana upravo za ovo djelo.

The author films a screen streaming a video montage he did with rushes filmed in different violent protests and in the catacombs. The source (PS2) is linked to a Tachyons+ Opti-Glitch which interferes with the live images in addition of the digital effects and the calibration Dérive set on the video. The camera filming the screen is linked to a video projector projecting the images for the spectators. In the meantime – the music (mostly vaportrap with samples), composed by Shai Hulud for the video, is played.

 

Dérive [FR]

— Fotograf i videograf iz Pariza. Izobličuje vlastite fotografije i autorske video snimke. Koristi razne tehnike u kategoriji digitalnog i analognog glitch stvaralaštva.

Dérive is a photographer and videographer based in Paris. He distorts pictures he takes and videos he shoots. He uses different techniques from digital to analog glitch.

Interface Fractures: IF4Q [Performance @ Klub Attack, Fri 13.10., 21:00]

Interface Fractures je niz audiovizualnih istraživanja koja Luka Prinčič od 2013. godine razvija u suradnji sa Slovenskom kinotekom. Kinematografske i zvučne epizode serijala dijele iste metode i format: uranjajuću situaciju mračnog kinematografskog prostora, uporabu alata otvorenog koda za generiranje slike i zvuka, te dihotomiju fiksne kompozicije i improvizacije u vremenu i tendenciju prema apstrakciji iz koje se, poigravanjem sinkronizacijom slike i zvuka, javljaju fragmenti konkretnog. Iako sami proces stvaranja podržava preispitivanje suvremenog ljudskog stanja, konvencionalna naracija performansa ostaje, kao manje bitnom – u drugom planu. Interface Fractures jest fragmentirani izlet u apstraktni zvuk i pokretnu sliku. Njihovo sintetsko prožimanje proizlazi iz procesa potrage za frakturama i subjektivnostima u naizgled neprobojnim, ispoliranim i polariziranim sučeljima – posredovanim, međustrojnim, međuljudskim.

Interface Fractures is a series of audiovisual explorations Luka Prinčič has been developing in collaboration with the Slovenian Cinematheque since 2013. The series’ cinema-sound episodes share the same method and format: an immersive situation in the darkness of the cinema, the use of digital and open source tools for generating image and sound, a dichotomy between fixed composition and improvisation in time, a tendency for abstraction out of which fragments of the concrete arise, and playing with the synchronisation of sound and image. Although the creation process includes an examination of the contemporary human condition, conventional narration is not so important in the created performances and remains in the background. Interface Fractures is thus a fragmented excursion into abstract sound and the moving picture. Their synthetic integration emerges from the process of searching for fractures and subjectivities in a seemingly impenetrable polished and polarised interfaces – mediated, inter-machinic, interhuman.

— Glazbenik, dizajner zvuka i medijski umjetnik. Od sredine devedesetih sklada glazbu, stvara sound art, izvodi performanse, te na razne načine manipulira novim medijima. Specijaliziran je za računalnu glazbu, elaborirane funk beatove, zvučne krajolike, “slučajnu glazbu” u živim umjetničkim izvedbama i video umjetnost, te eksperimente digitalnih medija.

 

Izvodi na festivalima kao što su Ars Electronica (Linz), EMAF (Osnabrueck), Netmage (Bologna) i Trouble (Brussels); radio je u ljubljanskom Digital Media Labu (Ljudmila) i lokalnom hackerspaceu KiberPipa (Ljubljana); izlagao  je u Galeriji Kapelica, u MSUM Ljubljana, te proputovao Europu (i dalje – New York i Novi Zeland) izlažući i izvodeći svoj rad. Trenutno radi na Emanat Institutu i vodi Kamizdat, glazbeni label avanturističke glazbe u Ljubljani.

Luka Prinčič is a musician, sound designer and media artist. He has been writing music, creating sound art, performing, and manipulating new media in various ways since mid-’90s. He specialises in computer music, elaborated funk beats, immersive soundscapes, incidental music for live arts & video, and digital media experiments.

He performed at festivals like Ars Electronica (Linz), EMAF (Osnabrueck), Netmage (Bologna) and Trouble (Brussels), worked at Ljubljana Digital Media Lab (Ljudmila) and local hackerspace CyberPipe (Ljubljana), exhibited at Kapelica Gallery, Museum of Modern Art and MSUM Ljubljana, and travelled with his work all across Europe and further (New York and New Zealand). He currently works at Emanat Institue and runs Kamizdat, music label for adventurous music, in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
